NOCK

Directing the flight path of the arrow

About seven years ago I parked my Fiat 500c in between two massive Ford F150s in the parking lot of West Town Archery in Brookfield, Wisconsin. My archery experience had been limited but it drew me in and I wanted to know more so I signed up for lessons.

Born a Sagittarius, I've always been attracted to the symbolism of the archer. Direction, Movement, Power, Force...

Among the first things I learned at West Town Archery was arguably the most important step called "nocking the arrow." The nock is the notch at the end of the arrow which fits securely in the bow string between two "nocking points." The best archers will tell you that this is the most crucial aspect of the set up insofar as it establishes the flight path of the arrow. Since most people center their attention on the target, this part of the process is often rushed or overlooked.

About 6 years ago, as I began to approach my health and wellness with a more informed level of commitment, the memory of that lesson learned in Brookfield before resonated now as a metaphor for this new direction.

I think of the first nocking point as the past, that which has taken place. The second is the future, which includes, among other things, your reaction to that which has taken place. While both the past and the future play an important role in our experiences, it's that space between, where the nock “clicks” in place, where we establish our flight path. That space is the pause before our reaction, the choice we make, the routines we establish and where we do the thinking. It's where we release the past and practice for what's ahead.

That space, is NOW and Nock Life at its core.
